The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
