Trump's Regime of Consequences and Incentives

The ex-president's voracious urge for payback has swiftly transformed into a methodical system. Over the twelve months, the leader's fury and whims have adopted the shape of official policies in ways reminiscent to historical authoritarian regimes. Justice department figures who fail to comply are summarily fired and substituted by loyalists. Opposing leaders who question him risk indictment, court proceedings and penalties. Critics have been labeled under presidential directives as “hostile to national interests”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with legal action as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Transformed

Each case involving targeting of political opponents and leniency for loyalists exhibits its own unique characteristics. But, regardless of their particular nature, they represent examples of what has developed as a deliberate approach. Such episodes are not random. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI officials, coupled with his appointment of devotees in key positions, commenced swiftly, promptly developed a regularity, and has now been molded into a system. Federal prosecutors and the FBI have been transformed into ideological bodies under Trump's direct orders to carry out his directives. Injustice has been turned into normal. It constitutes the retribution system.

Administration is more concerned with punishing the leader's supposed opponents than they are with safeguarding our country's safety.

Within the Structure

The beginnings of this system has been uncovered in the court filing of multiple previous top law enforcement executives filed in late summer in the US district court in Washington against agency head an administration figure and attorney general a key figure for illegal termination in “a campaign of payback against the officials for what the accused judged to be a inability to show sufficient political loyalty”. In the complaint that Brian Driscoll, the ex- temporary head, recounts a conversation in which he “freely acknowledged the unlawfulness of his behavior”.

He had tried to protect law enforcement officers from being terminated, the complaint claims. Patel informed him that “White House figures” – understood by the official to be the executive branch and justice department – had directed him to dismiss anyone who they determined as having worked on a law enforcement case against him. The filing continues: “Patel clarified that he had to dismiss the people his bosses told him to fire, because his ability to keep his own position was contingent on the ouster of the personnel who worked on matters involving the President. The director noted that there was no way he or Driscoll could do to prevent these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency attempted to put the leader in prison and he remembers.’” After Driscoll told Patel he was breaking the bureau's own regulations, Patel reportedly said “he understood that and he realized the essence of the immediate dismissals were almost certainly unlawful”.

Widespread Impact

Since Patel's alleged acknowledgment to the official, the justice department and the FBI have been weakened and reorganized for the administration's retribution system. Several of the bureau's top officials were terminated or pushed out in the initial period of the administration. Roughly 4,500 professional attorneys at DoJ have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than seven government attorneys, including those in the southern district of New York, quit in dissent over what they viewed as partisan influence in abandoning the criminal prosecution against the city leader, the mayor, in as a trade for his collaboration with Trump's ICE detentions of foreign nationals. The ethics division of the justice department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: 70% of its personnel has resigned. 33% of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The unit implementing environmental law has experienced the exit of half its management.

Favors and Penalties

In the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, the official, stepped down in protest against what she described as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, Trump's “enforcement chief,” showed up as the agent with him on Fox News to declare: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll reappear in the city.”. And, another figure, earlier the acting deputy attorney general and a past legal representative, who negotiated the arrangement, was granted an court role, a likely springboard to the supreme court.

The president's protection for wrongdoings perpetrated while in power, granted by the remarkable ruling of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus blocking his legal action over the political violence and preserving his political viability for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he relies to shield his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been freed to enable corruption. The consequence of the supreme court decision saturates his administration and the GOP thoroughly. The court matter has spread. As the former president's administration lawyer he said about the Watergate
